Will be attending the Great Online Teachers’ Retreat tomorrow. Going to bed early. Attended Amy Pence poetry reading at the Red Rock Review tonight – two students attended from my classes. Last night, I was inspired to begin again, albeit in exile, by Ibrahim Muhawi, translator of Mahmoud Darwish. Two poems written. Woohoo!
Reviewed a smattering of portfolios in classes today. Students are up against so much life. One lost a sister, another, gearing up to go to Afghanistan, is likely to get lost in the shuffle as government shuts itself down as part of a dramatic cost savings plan. Still others have been left high and dry by a husband, an illness or an abdicated sense of accountability. All have emailed or called to let me know. Surely we are not all destined to be hangers on.
