As Rilke has said, it is a distinct honor to be in the room with one getting born or one dying. I have had the privilege to be present for both. Neither was easy. Such events put one in mind of simple things – the ability to walk, talk, chew on one’s own – make one mindful that no activity is actually ever accomplished entirely on one’s own. Eve made the mistake of forgetting that when she chose the apple over obedience. May I continue to love and obey remembering the price already paid for my privilege to do just that.
